House Music and The Long Tail

Chris Anderson explains niche culture very well with an example which is the birth of house music in Chicago.
"In the early 1980s, in a club called the Warehouse in Chicago, the resident DJ, Frankie Knuckles, was doing soemthing new. He was remixing, mashing up different genres of music into something brand new. Knuckles took old disco classics, new Eurobeat pop ans synthesized beats, including those produced with then-new drum machines, and turned them into a frantic, high-energy amalgamation of recycled soul. Taking its name form the club, this new sound became known as house music.
DJs and clubs created a music a music industry that was radically different from pop music. Clubbing is really about the surfing the Long Tail of dance music, and this ecosystem has seen the evolution of new models of innovation around.
Here, we see the democratization of the tools of production which is one of the three forces of Long Tail. Cheap production technology reduced the cost of studio time; and cheap mastering technology made it possible for hundreds of small indie record labels to econimically press and market records.
As production and mastering costs continued to drop, house music exploded and fragmented into hyperspecialized genres such as deep house, funky house, and dub house.
The remixes are usually hyperspecialized for different microgenres, so they are complements to the original track. As the number of complements increases, the value of the platform track snowballs. This snowball effect is an other mechanism by which DJs-as-aggregators can efficiently navigate the long Tail of music, quickly and easily discovering which tracks are snowballs within their respective niches." (Anderson, 2006)*
After reading this book, I understood better, why everybody belongs to an underground culture or even they feel this way, and why the streets are full of emo guys, why the number of independent movie viewers is increased in the past 3 years. Blogs, users comments, Ebay, Amazon, Netflix, and of course Internet affect each other on a rotative basis.

THE LONG TAIL

I finished reading The Long Tail which was a phrase before turning to a book, first coined by Chris Anderson in 2004 Wired Magazine. Anderson argues that products that are in low demand or have low sales volume can collectively make up a market share that rivals or exceeds the relatively few current bestsellers and blockbusters, if the store or distribution channel is large enough. With The Long Tail concept, he explains Google's strategic thinking, websites similar to Amazon.com and future business models which is related to consumers in digital age and niches not hits.

There are three forces of The Long Tail;
1.Democratize the tools of production. It means more stuff, which lengthens the Tail.
2.Democratize the tools of distribution. It means more access to niches, which fattens the Tail.
3.Connect supply and demand means driving business from hits to niches.

The discussions were about the impact of the Digital Revolution on journalism. How audiences are moving from their old, passive attitude into the new, active role that affects even the production of the news.

It was about why 14 million people a week watch it. Because it is easier to hate a straw man or a straw Mexican than a person, it says.

The reality TV embodies everything there is to love ad despise about ths US-ambition, greed, free-spiritedness and vulgarity, boldness, shamelessness. And, it was pioneered overseas such as American Idol is British, Big Brother Dutch, Survivor Swedish.

You embrace a new, anything-goes culture that values chutzpah over tradition and propriety. The article ends with this: " What makes Bety ugly, in the long run, makes America the beautiful.

Agency of the Year

The last book that I read and tried to finish on time to return to library is about web advertising. This book is the thesis of Anja Janoschka from University of Zurich. In this book, she described the new forms of communication that emerged through the interactive capability of the Internet and discussed the effects they have had on the language used, in online advertising.
Also, she grouped the persuasive functions of web advertising from the linguistic perspective into two groups.
The first is the linguistic integration of the addressees. Which are;
1) Form of personal user addressing through means of personal and possessive pronouns, imperatives and questions which invite user to interact.
2) Abbreviated sentences and acronyms speed up to communicative exchange in chats.

Secondly, she looked linguistic persuasion through emotional appeal. These are;
1) Offering online games for entertainment purposes, creating curiosity and suggesting saving money.
2) Trigger words.
3) Language simplifications such as single letters and numbers.

This book is also a good source to learn the evolution of interactive advertising.

Divergent & Convergent Thinking

My project team and I made this children book for our "Creative Strategy" class. We tried to teach "convergent vs. divergent thinking" topic to someone who's never heard of it before.

Convergent thinking is oriented towards deriving the single best (or correct) answer to a clearly defined question. It emphasizes speed, accuracy, logic, and the like, and focuses on accumulating information, recognizing the familiar, reapplying set techniques, and preserving the already known. It is based on familiarity with what is already known (i.e., knowledge).

Divergent thinking, by contrast, involves producing multiple or alternative answers from available information. It requires making unexpected combinations, recognizing links among remote associates, transforming information into unexpected forms, and the like. Answers to the same question arrived at via divergent thinking may vary substantially from person to person but be of equal value. They may never have existed before, and are often thus novel, unusual or “surprising”.

It is believed that creative ideas are coming from divergent thinking.

Nowadays I am reading a book names "Remediation". It is about new media. It mentions that the new digital media is between immediacy and hypermediacy, between transparency and opacity. This oscillation is the key to understanding how a medium refashions its predecessors and other contemporary media. And "remediation" is the formal magic by which new media refashion prior media forms.
The logic of Immediacy is that : A medium purpose is to disappear. The goal of the virtual reality is to foster in the viewer a sense of presence : the viewer should forget that she is in fact wearing a computer interface and accept the graphic image that it offers as her own visual world. Virtual reality, 3D graphics, and graphical interface design are all seeking to make digital technology “transparent”. A transparent interface would be one that erases itself, so that the user is no longer aware of confronting a medium, but instead stands in an immediate relationship to the contents of that medium.

Hypermedia is a new kind of media experience born from the marriage of TV and computer technologies. Its ingredients are images, sound, text, animation and video, which can be brought together in any combination. It is a medium that offers random acces; no physical beginning, middle or end.

Along with immediacy and hypermediacy, remediation is one of the three traits of our genealogy of new media.

In modernist art, the logic of hypermediacy could express itself both as fracturing of the space of the picture and as a hyperconscious recognition or acknowledgement of the medium. Collage and photomontage in particular provide evidence of the modernist fascination with the reality of media. Just as collage challenges the the immediacy of perspective painting and photomontage challenges the immediacy of photograph. Photographs pasted beside and on top of each other and in the context of other media, such as type, painting, or pencil drawing, create a layered effect that we also find in electronic multimedia. As we look at Richard Hamilton's Just What Is It That Makes Today's Homes So Different, So Appealing ? Its cluttered space makes us aware of the process of construction. We become hyperconscious of the medium inphotomontage, because conventional photography is a medium whit such loud historical claims of transparency. The artisit is defining a space through the disposition and interplay og forms that have been detached from their original context and then recombined.

In this review they assess the accumulated expertise on visual persuasion in American society at the beginning of the 21st century.
This review enables the following generalization: The shared knowledge available in visual presentation domains is saturated with production technology information. By and large, the visual persuasion expertise of those in society most directly engaged in and trained for visual communication concerns the practical details of “how to produce a particulaer type of visual stimulus.” This is totally understandable; given the enormous complexities of mastering the use of modern technologies for makking buildings, televised images, physical objects, pictorial renderings, digitized images, and so forth. These technologies of production keep changing at a very rapid pace. Just keeping up with the “how to produce it” knowledge that grows exponentially must preoccupy professionals.
In bridging their expertise rom traditional media into the realm of supposedl new media, they must confront the issue of how much to import and how much to create anew, intheir production tactics. For example. During the 20th century, the photographic image seemed to present us with a secure authentic credible representation of reality. For over a hundred years, when we saw a photo we tended to trust in what it showed. We knew the photo images could be doctored, but for a long time the doctoring was fairly detectable. Photography was believed.That is no longer true. Photography is now almost suspect, because of he new digital editing capabilities that even lay people can master. The practical uses of photographic images must therefore be rethought by visiual communication professionals.
The necessity of concentrating on production technology education as a bedrock for visiual persuasion practical expertise means, however, that gains in the other aspects of visiual persuas expertise must be sacrificed. An individual can only gain valid expertise in a limited domain during same time period. If technical information in that narrow domain keeps changing, its mastery requires continual attention.

Tüketciyi anlamak için metaforlar önemliymiş. Geralt Zaltman böyle diyor. Kendisi Harvard Business School’da pazarlama profesörü.
Metaforlar tüketicinin dikkatini yönlendirir, algılama şeklini etkiler, karşılaştıkları şeylerden anlam çıkarmalarına yardımcı olur, kararlarına etki eder. Bu yüzden tüketicilerin düşüncelerini ve kararlarını anlamak ve de etkilemek için kullandıkları metaforları keşfetmek gerek. Reklamcılıkta metaforların çok önemli bir yer vardır. Örneğin Arçelik’in Çelik’inin bize çağrıştırdığı teknoloji ve sıcaklık. Fakat burada zor olan, metaforla ilgili sözle ifade edilemeyen düşünme şeklini açık bir hale getirmek.

Metaforları anlamak için şöyle yöntemler kullanılıyor; mülakata katılan tüketicilerin yanlarında resim veya nesneler getirmeleri isteniyor. General Motors firması otomobil tasarımı, reklam ve acentalarının görünümünü düzenlemek için metafor kullanmış. Mülakata katılan tüketicilerin yanlarında “olumluluğu” temsil eden nesneler getirmelerini istemiş. Katılımcılardan biri yanında şampanya bardağı getirmiş. Katılımcı bardağın basit ve açık tasarımının yeni bir günün başlangıcı gibi pek çok şeyi yansıttığını ifade etmiş. Bunun üzerine General Motors tasarımcıları, otomobil tasarımında olumluluğu yansıtmak için bu anlayışı kullanmışlar. Sözle ifade edilen sinyallere dayanarak metaforlara ulaşmak çok zor olacağından, nesnelerle ve resimlerle metaforlara ulaşılıyor.
Başka bir metafor bulma yöntemi de şu. Yazılım tedarikçisi bir şirket, müşterilerin telefon yardım hattı hakkında ne düşündüklerini öğrenmek için araştırma yapmış. Katılımcılar şöyle yorumlarda bulunmuşlar: “Telefon yardım hattından iyi hizmet almaya çalışmak, kafanızı duvara çarpmak gibi bir şey”, “ telefona hemen cevap veriyorlar. Tıpkı, bir tavşanı kovalayan tazı gibi”. Her tüketici farklı düşünce resimleri kullanmış ve birbirinden farklı tecrübeleri dile getirmiş. Ancak ifadeler güç ve hareketi kapsamış. Yani “pekmez kadar yavaş”, “kilitlenmiş”, “ahizeyi çarptım” gibi. Tüm bu ifadelerden anlaşılan “gücün” ve “ hareketin” eksikliği özellikle tüketiciler arasında göze çarpıyor. Çünkü insanlar telefon hatlarının hızlı ve verimli olmasını bekliyorlar. Şirket bu metaforlara göre iletişimini belirlemiş. Örneğin, yardım hattı çalışanları müşterilerle konuşurken güç ve hareket ifade eden metaforlar kullanmışlar.(“sorunu keşfedelim”, “ hemen harekete geçelim”, “hedefi tam ortasından vuralım” gibi) Şirket aynı zamanda, paketlerinin ve kulanma kılavuzlarının üzerindeki yardım hattı telefon numarasının yanına bir şimşek resmi eklemiş. Güç ve hareket ifade eden bu imaj, müşterilere ihtiyaç hissettiklerinde, hızlı ve verimli hizmet alabileceklerinin garantisi vermiş.

Türk Medyasında Kadın

Psikoloji bölümünde okurken yaptığım bir çalışmadan bahsetmek istiyorum. Türk medyasının nasıl bir kadın kavramı yansıttığı ve medyanın toplumumuzdaki kadın hakkındaki düşüncelerin değişmesinde ne yönde etkili olduğunu inceleyen bir araştırma. Bu çalışmayı Yard. Doç. Dr. Meltem Narter’le beraber gerçekleştirdim.
Araştırmada psikolojinin geleneksel yöntemleri kullanılmadı, söylem analizi tekniği kullanıldı. Bu yöntemde sayılara yer yok. Ve bildiğim kadarıyla Türkiye’de sadece İstanbul Üniversitesi Sosyal Psikoloji Anabilim Dalı’nda uygulanan bir yöntem.
İlk başta kısaca söylem analizinden bahsedeyim. Söylem; içinde doğulan tarih, kültür, dil, coğrafya ve din bileşenlerinin oluşturduğu bir bütünün zamansal ve mekansal anlamda ortaklıklarının sonucudur. Söylem dil tarafından üretilir ve aktarılır. Söylem sosyal yapıya gömülü olup, onun bir parçasıdır. Dolayısıyla söylem analizi insanı anlamak için sadece konuşmaları ve metinleri değerlendirmeye alır. Bu anlayıştan kısaca bahsettim, aslında altında çok daha derin konular var. Üniversite hayatımın en zor derslerinden biriydi ve ısrarla bu dersi almaya devam etmiştim.
Çalışmada 29 kişiyle mülakat yapıldı. Ayrıca medyanın kadını nasıl aktardığını gerçek kaynağından bulmak için yazılı basından yararlanıldı. Son bir yılda en çok satan kadın dergilerinin üçünden ( Elele, Elle, Cosmopolitan) ve yine en çok satan gazetelerin ikisinden ( Hürriyet, Zaman) “kadın” konusu başlığı altında seçilen yazılar söylem analizi tekniği ile analiz edildi.
Sonuç olarak;
Kadınlar medyada cinsellikleri üzerinden hem ticari meta olarak kullanılmaktadırlar yani içeriği zenginleştiren malzemeler hem de üretilen ürünün öncelikli alıcısıdırlar. Saktanber’e göre (1995) her konunun çıplak kadın bedeni ile anlatılması basitçe bir cinsiyetçi tutumun ötesinde, kadına erkek bakışıyla belirlenmiş cinselliğin dışında herhangi bir kimlik tanımamak anlamına gelir. Ona göre kadınlar yalnızca bir bedene indirgendikleri için değil, çeşit çeşit kılıflara sokulup, üzerlerinde sayısız anlamlar üretildiği için kimliksiz kılınırlar. Yani kadının erkeğin yanındaki ikincil konumu, onun kimliğini şekillendirmektedir.

Erkek kadına “bakan” konumdadır. Göle’ye göre İslam medeniyetlerinde erkeğin “bakma” ayrıcalığı, kadın gövdesini nesneleştirmesi yoluyla erkeğe cinsiyet ayrıcalığı sağlamaktadır.( Göle, 2001) Yani kadının nesne konumunda olmasında erkeğin önemli bir yeri vardır.
Fizyolojik dürtüler sadece erkeğe atfedilmektedir. Bunu mülakata katılan bir kişi şöyle dile getirmiştir: “Reklamlarda ve medyada kadının cinsel olarak ön plana çıkmasının nedeni kadının estetiği, erkeklerin fizyolojik dürtüleri ve kadını psikolojik olarak medyadaki kadın gibi olma isteği” Coward’ın Foucault’dan yararlanarak söylediği gibi cinsellik; kişinin kimliği ile iç içe olup, bastırılan bir içgüdü, yani doğadan gelen bir güç olmaktan çok toplumun kurallar ve düzenlemesi sonunda ortaya çıkan bir kurgudur. Bu da katılımcıların söylemlerinde fizyolojik dürtülerin neden sadece erkeklere atfedildiğini açıklamaktadır.
Kadın modern toplumsal ortamın eğlence, kozmetik, medya dünyasında yer alarak erkeklerin baskın olduğu bir dünyada kendisine temsil alanı oluşturmaktadır, bir yandan da endüstri ortamında üretilen ürünleri tüketmektedir. Böylece kadın ticari çarkın dönmesinde bir araç olur.
Kadın; dergilerde, reklamlarda, televizyonda gördüğü kadını arzular ve onun gibi olmak ister. Bu aynı zamanda erkeğin de arzusudur. Erkeğin de etkili olduğu kadınlık arzuları, kadının cinselliğini oluşturur. Böylece kadın belli şekillerde giyinen, belli yaşam tarzlarını isteyen, belli duyguları özleyen biri olarak tanımlanır. Kadının kimliği arzu tanımları içinde oluşur. Kadınlık arzuları erkek ayrıcalığını destekleyen söylemler tarafından cezbedildiği için değişimi oldukça zordur. ( Coward, 1993 )
Türk medyası modern bir kadın tanımlasa da, müslüman bir Doğu ülkesi olan Türkiye’de kadın, Batı’daki kadar “özne” konumunda değildir. Bugünkü söyleme baktığımızda kadın tanımlanırken erkek de bu tanımın içinde yer almaktadır. Bu süreç değişmeye başlasa da kadının ötekiliği devam etmektedir.

Yasemin Çongar’ın Milliyet Gazetesi’ndeki köşe yazısında okudum. Susan Sontag’ı anmak amacıyla köşesinde, onun bir röportajına yer vermiş. Psikoloji ve toplumun etkileşimine ışık tutan bir yazı. Susan Sontag şöyle demiş “Amerikalıların geçmişle bağlantısının çok zayıf olduğunun düşünüyorum. Bu ülkenin en ilginç yönlerinden biri, diğer ülkelerden geçmişle bağlarını kopararak gelen insanlardan oluşması. Bu yüzden de, Amerikalıların tarihsel bir bakışa direndiklerini düşünüyorum. Bir tür serhat ruh hali bu: Beğenmiyorsan, bırak git. Hiçbir yerde köklerin yok ve geçmiş aslında önemli değil çünkü her zaman gidebilirsin, başka bir yere taşınabilirsin ve yeni bir hayata başlayabilirsin. Bu ülkedeki egemen mitos bu gerçekten de. Parantez içinde söyleyecek olursam, bu ülkedeki psikolojik düşünce modasının da buna bağlı olduğunu düşünüyorum. Örneğin psikanaliz, burada başka yerlerde olmadığı denli başarılı oldu, çünkü insanlar onu geçmişten kopmanın bir aracı olarak kullanıyorlar. Size şu ya da bu biçimde bir süreç sunuluyor; bu süreçte geçmişinizi gözden geçirebilirsiniz, değerlendirebilirsiniz, sonra fırlatıp atabilirsiniz ve kendinizi yeniden yaratabilirsiniz, yeni bir şeye başlayabilirsiniz. Freud büyük bir kötümserdi, ama psikanaliz, bu ülkedeki iyimserliğin bir aracı haline geldi; psikolojiyi anlayarak geçmişten kurtulabileceğiniz mitosuna dönüştü.” ( 1969 )
Şimdi insan ister istemez Hindistan gibi Budizm’in egemen olduğu bir ülkede hangi psikoloji yaklaşımının etkili olduğunu merak ediyor. Tabii Budizm insanların hayatlarında ne derece egemen, bunu bilmiyorum ama en azından psikoterapiyi etkileyeceğini düşünüyorum.

Yaratıcı Mıyım?

Yaratıcılık doğuştan mı yoksa sonradan kazanılan bir yetenek mi tartışmalarına kendi açımdan son noktayı metin yazarlığı stajımda koydum. Yaratıcı mıyım değil miyim diye kendime sorardım. Fakat stajda yolu yordamı öğrenince bir şeyler çıkartabildim. Metin üzerinde düşününce oluyordu. Ne istendiğini ve fikri anlamak önemliydi. Tabii ki bir temel oluştuktan sonra yaratıcılık ortaya çıkıyor. Bilgi olmadan, kendini donatmadan hünerlerini sergileyemiyorsun.
David Ogilvy şöyle demiş “…yaratıcılığım için bilinçaltından gelen mesajların yanında çok çalışma, berrak bir zihin ve önüne geçilemez bir merak duygusu gerekir”.
Yaratıcı kişiler için birkaç kişilik tanımlaması da yapmış. Ogilvy; yaratıcı kişilerin gözlemci olduklarını, birçok fikri bir arada tuttuklarını, fikirleri birbirleri ile karşılaştırdıklarını belirtmiş. Ayrıca bildirimleri gözle görülür bir şekilde orantısızlaştırararak genelde bilinmeyeni ortaya çıkardıklarını söylemiş. Ve yaratıcı kişilerin daha karmaşık bir dünyaları varmış.
Şimdi bu kişilik özelliklerini sıralamanın ne gibi bir işlevi var? Bu laflar kişileri reklam sektörüne çekeceğine onları kaçırmış oluyor. Kimse fikirlerimi karşılaştırıyorum, yaratıcıyım, öyleyse ben reklam sektörüne gireyim demez. Ben en azından böyle demedim. Ortam ve ilgiler kişinin mesleğini seçmesini etkiler. Bence bu şekilde meslekler için yapılan kişilik özellikleri sıralamaları insanların gözlerinde olayı büyütmelerine neden oluyor. Tabii şöyle bir yararı olabilir, kendi yeteneklerinin farkında olmayan bir insanın durup bir düşünmesini sağlar. O zaman o kişiye “Kendini Tanımanın 11 Milyon Yolu” kitabını öneririm.
Diyelim ki metin yazarken değişik bir fikir bulmaya çalışıyorsun. Bu senin meziyetin değil ki, işinin gerektirdiği. Sürekli bu şekilde çalıştığın için bir süre sonra bu senin kişilik özelliğinmiş gibi görülüyor.
Yalnız metin yazarlarının mizah yönlerinin kuvvetli olduğu bir gerçek. Bunun için bir şey diyemem.
